3Only 29% of Pakistanis dwelling in rural areas have access to improves sanitation facilities while 72% in urban areas. Among 36 districts of Punjab, Rajanpur is ranked lowest district in terms of water & sanitation coverage.The purpose of such kind of projects is to provide access to sustainable Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services to the people living in the UCs of District Rajanpur in order to enable them to prevent water, sanitation and hygiene related diseases.

Based on the above facts, HELP Foundation is working for the provision of clean and safe drinking water. The aim of such projects is to provide the local communities with an easy access to pure water in the target areas. The aim also is to save the time of women who are traditionally bound by culture to fetch water for their households. Once water has been provided to the women at their doorstep, their time could be saved and utilized for other productive socio-economic activities enabling them to earn a decent living.

 

Health & Hygiene Promotion Campaigns in Schools

Such kind of projects have targeted a number of schools including government primary schools in the flood affected areas of District Rajanpur.

The objectives of the project were to:

  • Help students understand and develop good hygiene practices to prevent diseases related to lack of hygiene knowledge.
  • Improve the general hygiene and environmental condition of the targeted schools.
  • Meet the psycho-social and developmental needs of the targeted students .
  • Inculcate hygiene awareness on a long term basis and its replication from generation to generation.
  • Identify and prevent health problems associated with water and sanitation among students.
  • Advocate for the high-risk hygiene behavior and sensitize the beneficiaries about the need to adopt the appropriate use and maintenance of hygiene and health facilities.
  • Promote Child to Child (CtC) approach for hygiene promotion and community education for better healthy habits providing an outlet for families to be educated through their children.

To achieve the above mentioned objectives, health and hygiene training sessions were held in the targeted schools. During the projects' span a considerable children and teachers were oriented and sensitized regarding health & hygiene covering the following topics;

  • Introduction to Health & Hygiene
  • Personal & Family Hygiene
  • Healthy Food
  • Dental Cleaning
  • Skin Diseases
  • Five Senses
  • Principles of First Aid
  • Abdominal Diseases
  • Common Cold
  • Clean Water
  • Tobacco and Drug Abuse etc.

Other WASH/WATSAN activities include Latrine construction by adopting the approach of community led total sanitation.
